TIMBUKTU
the
Mysterious or «City of the
333 Saints».
On the bank of the river Niger and at the door of the desert, TIMBUKTU was founded in the 12th century by Tuareg people. In the 15th century, it goes under Songhai domination . Until the16th century, it keeps on progressing until becoming both a famous commercial metropolis and a major place for Islamic culture with its incredible number of coranic schools and its numerous libraries. From the 17th century onwards, the Moroccan conquest and the establishment of European trading posts on the coasts will its decline.
TIMBUKTU was judged mysterious by the Frenchman Félix Dubois in 1896.
It is the capital city of the seventh region of Mali. Every year, the "Festival in the Desert" organised inJjanuary attracts dnumerous stard and visitors, natives or foreigners.
