Ancient capital of the Bambara kingdom, headquarters of emblematic leaders : Biton Coulibaly, N'Golo Diarra and Dah Monzon, conquerred by the Toucouleur El Hadj Oumar Tall in 1861, then turned into a provincial chief town by the French, Segou is nowadays a modern town and an important crossroads in Intra-West African exchanges.
