DJENNE ... and its
ancient site DJENNE- DJENO
A bimillenial City , inscribed to the World Heritage.
Founded before Year 1000 by Soninke people, then developed by
the Songhais,
it is mentioned in the XVth century by the Arab geographer Leo
Africanus as a center for agriculture and commerce with the
traders of
Berberie.

TO VISIT
The visitor is first surprised by the particularity
of Djenne's architecture.
the huge mosque, built for the first time at the end of the XIIIth
century and often rebuilt is still nowadays a
religious centre.
Distroyed en 1830 by Cheikou Amadou, it was rebuilt in 1907.
The
archeological site of DJENNE- DJENO dates from the IIIrd century
before Jesus Christ.
TAPAMA DJENEPO's tomb is the tomb
of a young girl who was sacrificed to insure
the prosperity of
the town.
